Is My Child Ready for School? Signs of School Readiness

It is one of the biggest questions parents ask us, usually somewhere between a child’s fourth and fifth birthday. Is my child actually ready for school? The honest answer is that school readiness has very little to do with whether your child can write their name or count to twenty. It is about something quieter, and far more important.

At our preschool in Maroubra, we have guided hundreds of children through the transition to big school, and the ones who settle best are rarely the ones who arrive knowing the most. They are the ones who feel confident, independent and secure. Here is what school readiness really means, the signs to look for, and how you can gently help your child get there.

What does school readiness actually mean?

School readiness is your child’s ability to cope with the social, emotional and practical demands of a classroom, not their academic knowledge. A ready child can separate from you without distress, follow simple instructions, share and take turns, and have a go at things without giving up the moment they are hard.

The academics, letters, numbers, reading, come later and come quickly once a child feels safe and capable. Teachers will tell you the same thing: they can teach any child to read, but a child who cannot yet manage their emotions or ask for help will struggle no matter how many letters they know.

The real signs your child is ready for school

Every child develops at their own pace, so think of these as a general picture rather than a checklist to tick off. Most children show many, not all, of these signs by the time they start school.

Emotional readiness

• Can say goodbye to you and settle into an activity without lasting distress.
• Manages small frustrations and disappointments without falling apart.
• Shows curiosity and a willingness to try new things.

Social readiness

• Plays alongside and with other children, sharing and taking turns.
• Can follow simple two-step instructions, such as “put your bag away and sit down”.
• Asks an adult for help when they need it, rather than shutting down.

Practical independence

• Manages the toilet independently, including washing hands.
• Can open their own lunch box, put on shoes and manage a jumper with a little help.
• Recognises their own belongings and can pack them away.

Early learning foundations

• Holds a pencil or crayon and enjoys drawing and mark-making.
• Listens to a story and can talk about what happened.
• Recognises some letters or numbers, especially those in their own name.

How you can help your child feel ready

The good news is that school readiness is built through everyday moments, not flashcards. A few simple habits at home make a real difference:

Let them do things for themselves. It is quicker to zip the jacket yourself, but every time your child does it, their confidence grows. Independence is one of the strongest predictors of a smooth start to school.

Read together every day. Shared reading builds vocabulary, attention and a love of stories, and it is the single most valuable thing you can do for early literacy.

Talk through big feelings. Naming emotions (“you look frustrated”) helps children learn to manage them, which is exactly what they will need in a busy classroom.

Encourage play with other children. Sharing, turn-taking and negotiating are learned, and they are learned through play long before they are needed at school.

Readiness is not a race. A child who starts school feeling secure and confident will always do better than one who was pushed in before they were ready.
